Boulder man loses all limbs after contracting the flu and developing sepsis

BOULDER, Colo. — It started out as just the flu, but Boulder resident Josh Meyer's illness quickly worsened.

In early February, Josh's wife, Courtney, was away on a business trip and Josh was home alone with their two children. Josh came down with the flu, which eventually led to strep throat, pneumonia, and sepsis. When Courtney returned home, she helped isolate Josh in the basement, but when she went upstairs to check on her children, she found Josh collapsed on the floor.

“My body was exhausted,” Josh said.

Courtney took Josh to the hospital, where he was intubated on February 10 at UC Health Anschutz Hospital. After she remained in the cardiothoracic ICU for 35 days, Meyer was transferred to the critical care unit.

Sepsis took its toll on Josh, causing multiple organ failure and the amputation of his leg. Doctors also plan to amputate both of his hands in the next few weeks.

It's devastating for Josh, who had an incredibly active life. A former military veteran, Josh also loves skiing, hiking, and fishing.

Although Josh survived, he said there were times when he felt like his life was over.

“My wife had to make a decision to leave or fight, and she chose to fight,” Josh said.

Courtney has since We have started a GoFundMe We raised over $100,000. The funds will go toward a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, home renovations, and Josh's medical expenses.

Josh said he is grateful for the community's support and credits UCHealth doctors with saving his life.

“It’s not just my friends,” Josh said. “There are so many people I don’t even know who have chosen to share their time, donate, and show love.”

Josh still has a long recovery ahead of him, including a transfer to a long-term acute care facility, where he will learn to adapt to life without limbs.

Josh said he hasn't decided to move back home yet, but he can't wait to take his kids fly fishing when he does.

“I want to be able to hold them in my arms and wrestle with them, not just watch them,” he said.
