Louie Gohmert and the accidents of the cult of Donald Trump

To the editor: Virginia Heffernan is too kind to Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and other Republicans who refuse to wear masks because their stupidity is just another manifestation of their sectarian belief in President Trump .

If Trump calls the virus the Chinese virus, so must his followers. If he says that postal voting leads to fraud and that there is no Russian interference in our elections, or that he is the greatest of all presidents, then say the faithful.

On the other hand, there is some logic to this for Republican political candidates. After all, if they do not slavishly follow their master, they might not be elected, thus confirming the fears of Founding Father James Madisons: I start on this great republican principle, that the people will have the virtue and the intelligence to select men of virtue and wisdom. Is there no virtue among us? If there isn’t, we are in a miserable situation.

Until the last weeks of World War II, millions of Germans still believed that their Führer would save them from defeat and ruin. But of course, we are more virtuous and wise than they are, aren’t we?

To Editor: Six years ago, I saw my mom panting in the emergency room with lung disease. She looked like a fish out of the water sucking air, eyes bulging in sheer panic, face bright red and sweating profusely.

I kept her while the respiratory specialist heroically worked to help her breathe. It was terrifying.

Hopefully a public service announcement will be made that describes what it looks like and what is fighting for the air. This could make the suffering of COVID-19 patients more real for the uninfected.

Please wear a mask, not only to protect yourself but also to protect others. Believe me when I say you don’t want to be alone in a terror-stricken hospital with no loved one by your side.

To Editor: Attending the Trump rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 20, you could say that Herman Cain took a bullet for the president.

What could be more risky for a 74-year-old man than walking to a crowded gathering in a coronavirus hotspot? He sat in an indoor room with no social distancing and few people wearing masks. While we don’t know for sure where Cain contracted the virus that ultimately killed him, the result was almost as safe as a bullet.

Something good could come out of this tragedy. As a tribute to his friend, the president could abdicate control of the federal response to the pandemic and hand it unrestrictedly to Dr Anthony Fauci and a group of scientists. And, to avoid mixed messages, he should no longer tweet or comment on the pandemic.

It would be a win-win for the president. If he is successful, he can try to claim credit. Otherwise, he will have someone to blame.
