According to the US CDC, urinary tract infections are the most common bacterial infection, experienced by half of all women and a wide variety of older men.
Recurrent infections require short-term antibiotic treatment and occur in up to 30% of cases.
These researchers write that as antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections increase and drugs become less effective, new ways to prevent and treat these infections are needed.
For the nine-year follow-up, researchers analyzed electronic health record data from the original 2017 cohort.
During the nine-year follow-up, 48 participants remained completely infection-free.
The average infection-free period for the entire cohort was 54.7 months, 56.7 months for women and 44.3 months for men, a year shorter.
Also, 40% of participants reported repeat vaccination after 1 to 2 years.
Developed by Madrid-based Immunotek SL, the MV140 was tested in 2012 and is currently available off-license in about 26 countries, but not in the United States.
