Guyana swears in new leader, resolving war over oil wealth
GEORGETOWN, Guyana’s Guyana’s opposition party, has won a contested general election, ending a protracted political stalemate that has hampered investment and raised ethnic tensions in the small South American nation.
Opposition candidate Mohamed Irfaan Ali was sworn in as president of Guyana on Sunday, shortly after the national election commission said he had beaten incumbent David Granger by just over 15,000 votes, a margin of more than 3 percent. Supporters of both political parties, which split almost exactly between ethnic lines, fear they will be excluded from the benefits of oil if their opponents take power.
Rising international pressure and economic pain seemed to persuade the ruling party to relinquish control. Mr Grangers’ intransigence was condemned by all of Guyana’s economic partners, including its usually restrained neighbors in the Caribbean and the United States, which revoked the visas of senior government officials to disrupt the election.
Mr Granger, 75, continues to claim that a quarter of all votes showed signs of irregularity, even though the results were approved by at least four large groups of international observers.
In a statement Sunday, Mr Granger said he could not approve a flawed report, and that he would continue to campaign to ensure that all Guyanese votes were accurately recorded. He added that he would challenge the results in court, but did not stop calling supporters in the streets.
