ADHD patients continue to face drug shortages of Adderall and Ritalin due to high demand

For the approximately 10 million adults and 6 million children in the United States diagnosed with ADHD, it is difficult to obtain a prescription containing the exact medication ordered by a doctor.

The FDA first acknowledged shortages of these drugs more than a year and a half ago. Prescriptions for Ritalin, Adderall, and dozens of other attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder drugs are becoming harder to obtain, even as demand continues to rise.

“Unfortunately, if you don't take your medication, you will unfortunately develop symptoms of ADHD,” said Dr. Rishma Chand, a pediatrician at Dignity Health Northridge Hospital.

Prescriptions for Adderall have increased to nearly 35 percent in recent years, Chand said.

The shortage first started when Late 2022. Government agencies such as the DEA blame manufacturers for production delays, while manufacturers blame regulators for limiting production. As a result, medicines are not being manufactured fast enough to keep up with national demand.

Sharaon Aretsky's 12-year-old son needs ADHD medication every day, but due to the lack of supplies, he has to save every prescription he can get. That's when his son's concentration problems returned.

“He tends to drift and has difficulty staying on task,” she says.

With no clear end in sight to the shortage, parents like Aletsky have to go to multiple different pharmacies to find prescriptions for their children.

“I had to call different pharmacies over and over again to get through to the pediatrician and say, 'The pharmacy is closed,'” she said.

Aretzky's pediatrician recommended trying different formulations and doses, but some insurance plans may not cover alternative medications, creating another barrier for people with ADHD.

“You may want to try a different type of medication, switch from generic to non-generic, or refill your medication as soon as your pharmacy allows it,” Chand says.

While finding the right prescription can take time and is not a surefire solution, doctors say there are non-medical strategies you can use.

Using these strategies, Aletsky said her son was able to stay focused in school. But she hopes her shortage will be resolved soon.
