Pediatrician explains why vaccinations are recommended from an early age
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend continuing routine vaccinations for children.
April 22-29 is National Infant Immunization Week, which emphasizes the importance of protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
Recommended vaccines for children up to 15 months of age include RSV, hepatitis A and B, DTap, polio, and MMR.
Measles cases are increasing in the United States, with the CDC reporting seven outbreaks so far this year. This compares to her four outbreaks in 2023.
“Vaccination against MMR is highly effective, about 97% effective. We know that the fewer children are immunized, the greater the risk of the disease, so if your child is 12 years old or older, “We're trying to get them to receive the MMR vaccine as soon as possible, starting around March,” said Dr. Ashley Schumacher of Mercy Pediatric Clinic in Cedar Rapids.
