A tuberculosis outbreak at a Long Beach hotel leaves one person dead and 14 infected.Another 170 people may have been arrested.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — A deadly tuberculosis outbreak in Long Beach has forced city health officials to declare a public health emergency.

Long Beach City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis said they are working to stop the spread of the disease.

As of Monday, there were 14 reported cases of tuberculosis associated with single-occupancy hotels. Davis said nine people had to be hospitalized and one person died.

The name of the hotel cannot be released due to patient privacy laws, but people staying there may have been exposed to the disease.

“This just highlights the urgency of actually identifying people who have been exposed to this group and being able to get them tested,” Davis said.

This epidemic is concentrated among people experiencing homelessness. Davis said as many as 170 people may have been exposed to tuberculosis.

“This will require more resources than can be provided in normal day-to-day life, and the declaration of a localized public health emergency is necessary to quickly obtain the resources needed to effectively respond to this outbreak.” ” she said.
