Coronavirus: Fear of Type 1 Diabetes in Children With Declining Diagnosis

After the number of symptomatic children dropped by almost one-third during the pandemic, parents were urged to look out for type 1 diabetes.

From late March to mid-June, according to official statistics, 33 children were diagnosed in Wales compared to 48 during the same period last year.

If left untreated, children can develop life-threatening diabetic ketoacidosis.

One mother said she was “very lucky” to have her eight-year-old son diagnosed after suspected urinary infections.

From Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Toldi said Harrison’s behavioral changes initially extended to coronavirus pandemics and blockades.

What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that causes too high levels of glucose in the blood.

It occurs when you can’t produce enough insulin hormones to control your blood sugar.

Unlike type 2 diabetes, it is not related to age or weight. It can be treated with insulin injection.

“Type 1 diabetes can affect anyone,” said Dai Williams, director of Diabetes UK Cymru.

“It’s an autoimmune condition, and it’s unlucky.”

Experts warn that undiagnosed children can develop diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This is a condition in which harmful substances called ketones accumulate in the blood.

If undiagnosed or untreated, this condition can be life-threatening, although childhood deaths are extremely rare.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased thirst, toilet use, fatigue, and weight loss.

Harrison, who was diagnosed in May, is easily upset, but Toldi thought it was because he had missed his father and a school friend during the lockdown.

He also started to wet the bed at night. This is something he didn’t do because he was an infant.

“He drank more and went to the bathroom more, but it was a hot day so I didn’t think about it anymore,” Turdi said.

“But after that, accidents happened more often. I called the GP because I thought it was a urine infection.”

Turdi was asked to collect a urine sample during surgery. Within minutes, the GP called her and told her to take Harrison urgently.

A simple blood test confirmed type 1 diabetes and he was taken to the hospital on the same day.

“We were very lucky. Harrison was diagnosed about a week before most of the children who got worse.”

Figures from the Welsh Diabetes Network for children and adolescents show a 31.25% reduction in diagnoses compared to the same period last year.

Doctors are worried because their parents were unaware of their symptoms or were afraid to use medical services during the pandemic.

According to Davida Hawkes, chairman of the network and consultant pediatrician at Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, it may be too early to tell if this is the case.

Hawks also said, “While the numbers of children presenting appeared to be calm, the overall numbers would probably be fairer when analyzed at the end of the year.”

“Family believes that they are nervous about contacting health professionals, either by coming to a general practitioner or coming to the hospital, especially for fear of the prevalent nature of coronaviruses at the beginning of the lockdown period ..
