Olive oil may reduce risk of death from dementia | News
May 14, 2024—People who include olive oil in their daily diet may reduce the risk of: dementiarelated deaths, according to a new study from Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

“Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and contains compounds with antioxidant activity that may play a protective role in the brain,” Tessier said in a review of the study. I mentioned this in a UPI article on June 6th.
Until now, there was no known link between olive oil and dementia mortality. To fill this gap, Tessier and his co-authors diet Health outcomes of 92,383 American adults enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study II and Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Participants reported on their dietary habits, including olive oil intake, every four years over a 28-year period. The researchers categorized them as never consuming olive oil or consuming it only once a month. Consume up to 4.5 grams of olive oil per day. Consume 4.6-7 grams per day. or more than 7 grams per day. During the study period, there were 4,571 dementia-related deaths.
In this study, participants who consumed at least 7 grams of olive oil per day were significantly more likely to consume no or very little olive oil, regardless of genetic predisposition or overall diet quality. In comparison, they found a 28% lower risk of dementia-related death.
“We designed this analysis to be particularly robust,” Tessier told UPI. “By repeatedly measuring dietary habits and considering sociodemographic and lifestyle factors in our statistical models, we were able to isolate as much as possible the impact of olive oil consumption on dementia mortality. For example, people who use olive oil in cooking and as a dressing generally have better overall diet quality, but interestingly, we found that this association was independent of this factor. This suggests certain benefits associated with the consumption of olive oil itself.
