His rig sucked about 60% of 1 micron particles from the air and about 90% of 10 micron particles.
Of course, it only provides a single pass removal efficiency, not the volumetric airflow through the device. Rosenthal didn’t have that, but he used an anemometer-probably a windmill-like airspeed sensor for outflow rather than a device for measuring sea anemones. Without the filter, the fan’s mid-range gave him 780 feet per minute. The 1-inch thick MERV-13 filter dropped it to 320 feet per minute. However, the airspeed of the 4-inch thick filter with an anti-intuitive twist was 460 feet per minute. This is because the fan produces a positive pressure. “Positive pressure is distributed throughout the area of the filter. There is one area for the filter. The media area for the filter is different,” Rosenthal says. “When using a pleated filter, the media area is significantly increased, so the pressure is distributed over a larger media area, resulting in greater airflow.”
In other words, the thicker the filter, the better the airflow, and the more air that can be drawn into the room, refreshing the room to replace particles that may contain viruses.
However, Rosenthal does not intend to calculate CADR. This is too informal. “It’s not an air purifier and we don’t recommend estimating the CADR. It’s a box fan high efficiency filter,” he says.
This is not science yet. These are not peer-reviewed studies. It has not been tested many times under ideal conditions. No one is running these statistics. Warning experimenter.
