'No Frying Day' – Dermatologist offers skin protection advice as summer tanning season approaches
LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Friday before Memorial Day is known as “No Frying Day.”
Before you head to the pool or BBQ, be sure to prepare all the ways you can protect your skin. Dermatologists share the best sunscreens and other strategies to stay safe.
If you're planning on enjoying the summer to the fullest, don't forget to protect your skin.
“There's no such thing as a safe tan,” says dermatologist Dr Han Lee. Comprehensive Dermatology Center In Pasadena.
She says that the coveted caramel glow is actually the skin's response to damage. Skin canceraccounting for more than 90% of deaths.
“This is one of those cancers that affects young people and it can be deadly,” she said.
A typical sign is a mole that changes shape or color.
This isn't just a concern for fair-skinned people: Dr. Lee sees many Asian, Latino and African-American patients with a type of melanoma called acral lentiginous melanoma, which can be more aggressive.
“If you suddenly notice a darkening or spreading brown line on your nail, it could be a sign of skin cancer,” Lee says.
Basal cell skin cancer is the most common, followed by squamous cell carcinoma.
“Anything that's growing, changing or not healing needs to be examined,” she says.
The longer you're out in the sun, the greater your risk, so the best strategy for all skin types is to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Creams and lotions are Dr. Lee's first choice.
“It should be applied about 30 minutes before going outdoors as it penetrates better and provides better protection,” Lee said.
Reapply every two hours. Because of concerns about ingredients in chemical sunscreens, Dr. Lee recommends physical sunscreens, which typically contain zinc or titanium dioxide. Look for products that offer broad-spectrum protection. Don't forget your scalp, especially if you have thin hair.
“You definitely need to protect your head, but behind the ears is an area that's often forgotten. And because a lot of people are wearing flip-flops, the tops of your feet also need to be protected,” Lee said.
She also recommends wearing SPF hats and clothing and limiting sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
“Don't be afraid of the sun. Take your vitamin D,” she said.
But always in moderation.
“It's like wine, a little bit is good, but too much is not,” Lee said.
