Avelas Biosciences, San Diego’s biotechnology, helps surgeons remove tumors by making them glow
La Jolla-based Avelas Biosciences reported on August 4 that surgeons are less likely to leave a trace of breast cancer when operating on patients who were given molecules designed to light up tumors. did.

Some cancers are left behind in between 20% and 40% of breast cancer surgeries. In these cases, the patient will have to undergo a second surgery. Dr. Ann Wallace, director of UC San Diego Health Comprehensive Breast Health Center, may choose to remove the entire breast rather than the risk of remaining underlying cancer cells.
If there was a way to be sure that the surgeon had removed enough tissue during the surgery, that could all be avoided.
That’s where the Avelas molecule comes in. This molecule reacts with proteins found in cancer cells, but not in healthy cells. When flashing blue light, the breast tumor glows green.
Wallace has directed the first clinical trial of the molecule at UCSD, which has shown it to be safe. The latest results from a study of approximately 120 women with breast cancer suggest that this molecule may be a useful tool for surgeons.
Jay Lichter, CEO of Avelas, said he plans to discuss trial results with the US Food and Drug Administration by the end of this year. Based on that conversation, Avelas may immediately apply for FDA approval with the goal of selling the molecule by 2023.

The company is also investigating whether the molecule can help surgeons get rid of tumors in other types of cancer, such as ovarian, colon, and head and neck cancers.
Avelas’ approach is based on Roger Tsien’s work, which shed light on the chemistry behind some jellyfish glowing in the dark.
