Mosquito-borne dengue virus reported in Alabama, Florida
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) – Dengue fever, a blood-borne disease transmitted by mosquitoes, has been reported in Alabama, as well as Florida and Georgia.

People who may have been infected with dengue should only use painkillers that contain acetaminophen. Avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) because of the risk of bleeding.
The best way to prevent the spread of dengue fever is to eliminate places where mosquitoes can lay their eggs, usually in man-made containers that collect water, such as rainwater buckets or dirty livestock water troughs.
Other ways to help prevent it include installing screens on windows and doors and using mosquito repellent when outdoors.
As of May 29, 2024, Alabama has reported one case of dengue fever. Georgia has reported 12 cases and Florida has seven locally-reported cases, totaling more than 170 cases.
