Feeding peanuts to young children may reduce allergy risk: study
(The Hill) — Children who consume peanut products during the first five years of life are less likely to develop peanut allergies as they reach early adolescence, according to a study published Tuesday.
In the new study, Published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) is a follow-up to an earlier study that showed a strong association between early peanut exposure from age 4-6 months to age 5 years and a reduced risk of developing a peanut allergy. Researchers compared the incidence of peanut allergy in a group that consumed peanuts with a group that avoided peanuts during the same time period.
The latest study shows that tolerance developed from peanut exposure during childhood persists even when subjects reach age 13. A follow-up study of 497 of the 640 subjects from the original study found that the prevalence of peanut allergy was significantly higher in the original group who avoided peanuts than in the group who had consumed peanuts since childhood.
In the group who avoided peanuts in childhood, 38 of 246 (15.4%) developed a peanut allergy, while in the other group who consumed peanuts from childhood, 11 of 251 (4.4%) developed a peanut allergy by age 13.
Although participants were allowed to eat peanuts as they pleased from age 5 to 13, participants in both groups reported avoiding peanuts for extended periods of time.
