Mosquito-borne virus discovered in Saginaw County
Saginaw Co., Michigan (WNEM) – Recent rains and warmer temperatures in Mid-Michigan have ensured that mosquito season is upon us, and the first detection of a mosquito-borne virus in Saginaw County is a sign of things to come.
Two recent samples have found Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) and although the risk of contracting the virus is low, people should still take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
Two mosquito samples collected by the Saginaw County Mosquito Control Committee (SCMAC) on May 22 contained JCV.
“Any virus that's mosquito-borne, we want to make sure people are taking precautions,” said Bill Stanuzek, chairman of the mosquito control committee.
Summer in Mid-Michigan is a time when mosquitoes and the viruses they carry are highly active, so it's that time of year again when health officials urge people to use insect repellent and wear appropriate clothing.
“We've had a lot more water this spring and a lot warmer temperatures, so it's not just the mosquitoes, but Mother Nature has taken full advantage of that,” Stanuzek said.
Stanuzek said JCV is less likely to be transmitted, but is more prevalent among deer.
“This is a mosquito-borne virus that we hear about every year, like West Nile virus or Eastern equine encephalitis, and it's a little less severe than that,” he said.
Stanuzek added that infected people rarely show signs of infection, but when they do, they usually have symptoms such as headache, fever and fatigue. In rare cases, JCV can also cause serious illness of the brain and spinal cord, including encephalitis and meningitis.
As summer deepens, the committee is suggesting best practices for preventing illness and avoiding mosquito bites.
“Look for any standing water in your yard and remove it. We recycle and collect tires, so if you have any old tires at home, please call us and we can bring them to our store or drop them off,” Stanuzek said.
The committee says it's important to install properly fitting screens on doors and windows, as well as keep them closed, especially at night.
SCMAC shared the following prevention methods:
- Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.
- When you are outdoors, wear socks, shoes, light-colored long pants, and long-sleeved shirts.
- Apply insect repellent containing DEET or other EPA-approved products according to label directions. Ask a doctor before using insect repellents on infants.
- Remove all standing water around your yard that could lead to mosquito breeding, such as buckets of water, wading pools, old tires, and other items that could collect water.
- To report standing water in roadside ditches, flooded yards or fields, or similar areas that may be mosquito infested, contact SCMAC.
“If you feel like you're about to be bitten by a mosquito, use insect repellent or turn back and go back inside until the situation calms down,” Stanuzek says.
SCMAC said it will continue to monitor and respond to mosquito-borne viruses until the end of September. It urges residents to take appropriate measures to avoid mosquitoes.
If the crow or jay has been dead for less than 24 hours, contact the SCMAC office at (989) 755-5751. SCMAC said these birds are valuable for monitoring West Nile Virus because of the high mortality rate from the virus.
Six Michiganders have been infected with JCV in 2021, one in 2022 and four in 2023. So far this year, no one has tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease.
