The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has finally approved doxycycline being taken after unprotected sex as a way to prevent the spread of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
CDC officials called it the first new tool in decades to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and said the innovation was badly needed. Rates of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea have been rising for years, especially among gay and bisexual men, but the latest data It suggested that chlamydia and gonorrhea cases will stop increasing in 2022.
The new guidelines are specifically aimed at gay and bisexual men and transgender women who have had a sexually transmitted disease in the previous year and are at high risk of reinfection. While studies have demonstrated that doxycycline works for this group, there is not enough evidence to make the same recommendation for others, officials said.
Officials are calling the treatment doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis, or doxy PEP. Doctors can prescribe one dose of 200 milligrams of doxycycline to be taken within three days of unprotected sex, according to the CDC.
In October, the CDC release Draft guidelines. The proposed language was slightly changed after a public comment period. Changes include clarifying that tablets should only be taken once every 24 hours and that doctors should reevaluate dosing regimens with patients every three to six months.
