Gut bacteria in young people may increase risk of colon cancer
June 5, 2024 – Genetics and diet have long been the leading causes of a surge in colon cancer among young adults. Now, an early look at genetic data from patients with the disease suggests the cause may be linked to what's going on in the gut.
The findings were presented recently at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago by researchers from Ohio State University. To analyze, the researchers looked at genetic data from the tumors.
The researchers found signs that a high-fat, low-fiber diet could increase inflammation in the gut and disrupt natural tumor suppression. The cells of young people with colon cancer appeared to age an average of 15 years faster than their chronological age. This is unusual because older people with colon cancer do not experience such accelerated cellular aging.
