Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month Commemorated at City Hall
LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – June is recognized nationally as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, and locally in Laredo, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Trevino is working with the Alzheimer's Association to raise awareness about the impact this disease has on our community.
Currently, an estimated 6.7 million people in the United States have Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's Association.
By 2050, that number is estimated to reach 13 million.
In a heartfelt proclamation, Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño proclaimed June as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month.
The city is highlighting the impact the disease can have on an individual's memory, cognition and daily life.
Maxine Viera, program manager for the Alzheimer's Association of South Texas, said South Texas accounts for 14 percent of the roughly 7 million people diagnosed with Alzheimer's nationwide.
“Webb County is at the forefront of these diagnoses within the South Texas region, so our work, or our hope and goal as an association, is to make sure that everyone can get diagnosed quickly, participate in their own care and benefit from the newest treatments that are available on the market,” Viera said.
The Alzheimer's Association has a support group that meets the first Tuesday of each month at the University of Texas Laredo Education and Research Center and also offers educational workshops for family members and others living with the disease.
