Anti-sunscreen campaign sparks criticism among doctors
Phoenix (AZ Family) — It's all over Instagram and Tik Tok: Search “anti-sunscreen” and you'll get a ton of videos from influencers trying to convince people that using sunscreen is more harmful than not using it.
John Schaff, MD Stockton DermatologyHe said patients often ask about claims that chemicals in sunscreen cause cancer.
“When it comes to sunscreen, you have to carefully weigh the benefits and risks,” he says. “There are unknowns, but the benefits far outweigh the risks.”
While Shaff is hesitant about all the hard-to-pronounce ingredients, he believes the chemicals are in such small amounts that they're unlikely to cause cancer, but he does recommend mineral-based sunscreens over chemical-based products.
“We all tell our patients that anything is better than nothing. Don't go out without something, whether it's a spray, a chemical or mineral-based sunscreen, or some kind of clothing,” he says. “At the end of the day, anything is better than nothing.”
Shaff said most people forget to reapply sunscreen, so wearing clothes that provide protection are even better. Here are some tips to beat the heat this week:
- Stay in the shade as much as possible.
- Don't forget to stay hydrated.
- Avoid peak hours between 2pm and 4pm, but if you must be outdoors, wear a hat and other protective clothing.
- Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply after about 90 minutes or after swimming.
