The United States Department of Agriculture announced that a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in a dairy herd in O'Brien County. This is the first reported case of HPAI in a dairy herd in Iowa. HPAI travels through wild birds but is often fatal to poultry such as chickens and turkeys. Less than a month ago, USDA announced that avian influenza had been found in dairy cows in several states. Now, USDA is tightening restrictions on taking these livestock across state lines. “Given the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza in dairy cows in many other states, it is not surprising given the size of Iowa's dairy industry. While lactating dairy cows appear to recover with supportive care, we know this devastating virus can still be deadly to poultry. “USDA teams are preparing for this possibility and will soon be announcing additional response measures to protect our chicken and beef herds,” said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig. “Chicken and dairy farmers should take immediate steps to strengthen their biosecurity defenses, limit non-essential visitors, and report any symptomatic birds or cattle to the USDA. The United States Department of Agriculture announced that a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in a dairy herd in O'Brien County.

This is the first reported case of HPAI within a dairy herd in Iowa.

HPAI can infect wild birds, but it is often deadly to poultry such as chickens and turkeys. Less than a month ago, the USDA announced that avian influenza had been found in dairy cows in several states. Now the department is tightening restrictions on the importation of those dairy cows.
