Michigan officials warn drugs contain second deadly animal sedative
A deadly new drug is circulating in Michigan, leading to at least three overdose deaths in the state since March, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Like its predecessor, xylazine, the new drug medetomidine is a non-opioid veterinary tranquilizer that is not approved for use in humans.
Like xylazine, it is often mixed with fentanyl and distributed as heroin.
Like xylazine and the other drugs it is added to, medetomidine depresses the central nervous system, slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure and reducing brain activity, adding another deadly layer to illegal drugs.

Also, like xylazine, its effects cannot be reversed by Narcan (naloxone), which only works on opioids.
However, it is more potent than xylazine.
Also, unlike xylazine, there are no test strips available for drug users to test for it.
According to data cited by the Michigan Department of Health from Western Michigan University's Swift Toxicology of Opioid-Related Mortality (STORM) Project, medetomidine was found to be present, along with other drugs, in postmortem toxicology tests of three people who died of drug overdoses. The deaths occurred in Wayne, Ingham and Berrien counties.
“Medetomidine is believed to be more effective than xylazine, and we want to ensure Michigan residents are aware of this new and dangerous drug that has been linked to overdose deaths in our state,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the state's medical director.
“Naloxone does not directly reverse the effects of medetomidine or xylazine, but these tranquilizers are often used in combination with opioid drugs such as fentanyl. can “This drug is irreversible, which is why we continue to urge individuals who use drugs and their family members to carry naloxone to prevent overdose.”
