June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, and the Alzheimer's Association is encouraging everyone to take charge of their brain health.
More than 6.7 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, making it the most common type of dementia.
Dawn Vann, board president of the Alzheimer's Association of Tennessee, talks about how the association spreads awareness about the disease and how you can get involved.
“We want families to know that we're here for them every day on this journey, and that the journey will evolve, and we want the community to know that the Alzheimer's Association is here with free resources,” Vann says.
Early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or dementia include:
- Memory problems that interfere with daily life
- Challenges in planning and problem solving
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks
- Confusion of time and place
- Withdrawal from work or social activities
June 20th is the summer solstice, the day to dispel the darkness of Alzheimer's disease.
“We have a lot of great partners here in Chattanooga, like Charter Living, who organized 'The Longest Day' and are running the campaign here, which is a fun way for different organizations to get involved in something they love,” Vann said.
Fundraisers like these help make a huge difference in research and the fight to find a cure.
“We are excited about the breakthroughs that are happening in treatments because these are the first of their kind that address the underlying cause of the disease rather than treating the symptoms of the disease,” said Bang. “Stay tuned; we'll be making a big announcement at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference this summer.”
