Amid slight increase in COVID-19 cases and new variants, LA County says it will take “common sense precautions” – Daily News
Acknowledge small increases COVID-19 Based on case data from the past month, Los Angeles County health officials on Friday again urged residents to take “common sense precautions” to curb the spread of the virus and avoid a summer surge in infections.
According to the county health department, COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have surged over the past three summers as people took advantage of warmer weather to travel and gather with others. In 2021 and 2023, cases began to gradually increase in early July, and in 2022, the increase began in early May.
Fueled by the emergence of the new “FLIRT” variant of the virus, the county has already begun to see “slight increases” this year in reported COVID-19 cases, test positivity rates and virus concentrations in wastewater.
The county has averaged 106 new coronavirus cases per day this week, up from 83 per day last week, according to the Department of Public Health. Health officials reminded residents that the official number of cases is an undercount of the actual number of cases because many people are not getting tested or are not reporting their home test results to health officials.
Because of a lack of reporting, health officials are also monitoring levels of the virus in sewage to get a better idea of infections, which are now hovering at about 16% of the most recent winter peak, up from 11% a week ago, according to the county.
The county is also seeing an average of 19.6 coronavirus-related hospitalizations per day, up from 16.9 three weeks ago. Health officials said 9% of coronavirus patients hospitalized in the past week were in intensive care units.
COVID-related deaths remain low, with the county reporting an average of one a day.
“While COVID-19 transmission patterns continue to change, Public Health encourages residents to take simple precautions to reduce transmission,” the department's statement said. “Summer plans can easily be interrupted by COVID-19 illness, and outbreaks continue to pose additional risks for seniors.”
“COVID-19 testing remains recommended, especially for anyone who believes they have COVID-19 symptoms. Free testing is available at local pharmacies throughout Los Angeles County and through most insurance plans.”
Anyone who tests positive should self-isolate until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication and symptoms have abated. Health officials continue to encourage vaccination, including the latest booster dose. Vaccination information and instructions are available at publichealth.lacounty.gov/vacines.
