How to spot the signs of melanoma
Athletic trainer Collin J. Haller was at the peak of his career running and weightlifting when he was diagnosed with skin cancer at just 25 years old.
“He had a normal looking mole – there was nothing wrong with it, it was a normal colour, normal size, no strange edges,” Collin's sister, Sarah Kinling, said.
Kinling said the mole is located behind her knee and swells and bleeds when she exercises.
“He said, 'Wow, this is a problem. Let's get it checked out and have it removed,' but it wasn't until he got the test that he found out it was cancer,” Kinling said.
She said he was already at stage 3. Within two years, he was at stage 4.
“He had to put everything on hold in his life to get treatment, which was surgery. They removed a lot of lymph nodes,” Kinling added.
Colin died the following year at age 28.
“I learned through this experience that it doesn't matter what color your skin is, how old you are, how young you are, whether you tan or not, or how easily you tan, you are always susceptible to skin cancer,” Kinling said.
Dr. Victor McGlaughlin of Patient First lists the ABCDs as ways to tell if you have signs of melanoma: What is the asymmetry, border, color and diameter of the mole or spot?
“Everyone has moles and skin issues, but if this one looks different from other moles it may be a cause for concern,” Dr McGloughlin says.

Taking some safety precautions can help protect your skin and prevent skin cancer.
“Avoid the sun during peak hours between 10am and 4pm, wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply frequently, and cover as much exposed skin as possible,” Dr McGloughlin said.
He recommends getting tested once a year, which Kinlin does, and says the test is easy to get.
“We do a body-by-body scan, looking at the skin, checking for abnormalities, asking questions: 'Is there anything that concerns you? Have you noticed anything different?' It could be a five-minute process, or it could be 30 minutes,” Kinling said.
