A new eye-tracking study finds that simply gazing at elements of nature during an urban walk can have significant benefits for your mental health.
The research, by Bangor University and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, was published in the journal Science. Humans and Natureshowed that engaging urban residents and focusing their visual attention on greenery rather than man-made structures can reduce anxiety and increase feelings of recovery.
The study involved 117 city residents who were guided to wear eye-tracking glasses and take a 45-minute urban walk. Participants were instructed to focus their gaze on trees, plants, grass, flowers, man-made structures, or both. This unique methodology revealed that when participants focused on nature, a range of mental health indicators improved, including anxiety levels and feelings of resilience.
Dr Whitney Fleming, lecturer in human geography at Bangor University, explained the findings:
“We found that people who were guided to direct their gaze towards green elements reported significantly reduced anxiety, with trees showing the greatest positive effect.”
“This study highlights the strong association between observing green elements, particularly trees, and increased perceptions of resilience, suggesting that even brief interactions with nature may have mental health benefits.”
