Moderna's combined flu and coronavirus vaccine passes advanced testing
Pharmaceutical company Moderna said its combination flu and COVID-19 vaccine, which treats two illnesses with one shot, has passed a key part of final-stage scientific testing.
Phase 3 trials have shown that the vaccine produces protective antibodies in the body.
And studies have shown it's just as effective as getting separate flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
Moderna says fewer injections would be more convenient and easier.
Chief executive Stéphane Bancel told BBC News that he hopes a messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine will be widely available by 2026 or even 2025.
“We are very pleased with this outcome because it is the first time in the world that a company has been able to show positive results in a phase 3 clinical trial combining an influenza vaccine with a COVID-19 vaccine in a single dose,” he said.
“One dose, one needle” means “peace of mind and peace of mind for consumers.”
Rivals Pfizer and BioNTech are testing similar two-in-one mRNA vaccines against influenza and COVID-19.

But the plan is to eventually offer the new vaccine to younger people as well.
Side effects were generally mild and, like those with regular vaccines, included slight pain where the needle entered the skin and some fatigue.
The company plans to present the findings at a medical conference and also submit them for publication.
Prof John Tregoning, an immunologist at Imperial College London, said research into dual vaccines was a “promising direction” but the scientific community needed to wait and examine the full data.
