Whooping cough continues to spread in Western North Carolina
Macon County is the latest county in Western North Carolina to issue a public health alert about a whooping cough outbreak spreading throughout the region, with six confirmed cases affecting multiple age groups, according to a news release Friday from Macon County Public Health.

Meanwhile, Henderson County, where the first whooping cough cases were reported in Western North Carolina this year, is showing signs of a local outbreak slowing.
Public Health Information Officer Andrew Mandenk told BPR that the number of cases remains at 119, up from the first week of June, and officials hope the county has passed the peak.
“Closing schools over the summer certainly helped,” he said. Henderson County saw its first case in April. BPR previously reported.
Infections also appear to be declining in neighboring Transylvania County, where 53 cases have been confirmed since early May, according to health department spokeswoman Tara Rybka, and no new cases have been recorded since the end of May.
Whooping cough infects the airways and lungs and is easily spread by coughing and sneezing. It gets its name from the whistling sound you make after coughing. Symptoms usually appear 5-10 days after infection, but can take up to 21 days.

The end of the school year means children will no longer be congregating in classrooms and hallways, but it also means the start of summer camp season and other programs that bring children closer together. In addition to getting information out to the community, local health departments are also working to inform local summer camps.
In Henderson County, that will also include guidance on what symptoms to watch for and assistance with accessing testing and treatment measures, Mandhenk said.
