Men's Health Month: Prostate Cancer Screening
BALTIMORE — June is Men's Health Month.
James Williams Jr. was in good health at age 39. He was running marathons, but his late wife urged him to get a prostate exam as part of his annual physical.
“So I thought, it's an old man's disease, why should I get tested for prostate cancer? I'm in good health, I'm healthy,” Williams said.
He had a prostate-specific antigen test, which was high, but one doctor said it was nothing to worry about. He sought a second opinion.
“I was able to see Dr. Arthur Burnett Jr. at Johns Hopkins. He said let's wait and see for six months. My numbers doubled. I had a biopsy and it came back positive for prostate cancer,” Williams said.
Mr Williams, 64, is a two-time prostate cancer survivor and believes catching the disease early and getting the right treatment saved his life, and he urges all men over 45 to get tested.
“I would go to the movies and see the long lines, I would watch football and basketball games, I would watch my own family get-togethers. And I started with my own family.
“All the men in my family, my uncles, men my age, are getting screened for prostate cancer,” Williams says.
A prostate exam is just one of the tests that men should undergo.
“Prostate exams are very important as you get older, especially over 40. Colonoscopies are just as important for men as they are for women. We also screen for diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Stuart Bell, attending physician and medical director at Med Star Union Memorial Hospital.
Dr Bell says men should have prostate and colon exams by age 45, or earlier if they have a family history.
“I think the takeaway from this is that it's very individualized. You need to make sure you understand the risk profile of the other person. And then you have to make a joint decision.”
Dr Bell says there are other things men should be careful about, such as testicular cancer. Younger men are at higher risk for testicular cancer, and if they are smokers, Dr Bell says.
You should get screened for lung cancer.
