First Lyme disease case of the year confirmed in London area, health officials warn of early tick season
The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting the first diagnosed case of Lyme disease in an adult in Middlesex County.
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted by the bite of black-legged ticks, also known as deer ticks. If the tick is attached for more than 24 hours, symptoms may include a bull's-eye rash, headache, fever or chills, fatigue, muscle and joint pain. If left untreated, it can affect the joints, heart and nervous system, causing long-term health problems.
“It's normal to see a few dozen cases of Lyme disease each year,” said Dr. Joan Kearon, MLHU's associate medical officer of health, “but because this is earlier than normal, we wanted to remind people that tick season is already here.”
Mr Kearon could not confirm exactly where or how the person came into contact with the tick, but confirmed the Middlesex-London area is an established risk area for black-legged ticks, and residents are advised to be aware of ticks which may be present in grassy and wooded areas, and to check themselves for ticks after exposure.
