Health Minister Joe Pahaala announces one death in Gauteng
South Africa's health minister announced the country's first confirmed Mpox death.
Minister Joe Faala said a 37-year-old man who had been admitted to a Gauteng hospital three days ago died from contracting the virus on Monday.
Faala said all five of the confirmed cases in the country this year – one in Gauteng and three in KwaZulu-Natal – were classified as severe and required hospitalisation.
He said all the infected people were men aged between 30 and 39 and had no history of travel to other countries where the virus was spreading, suggesting local spread.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection transmitted by close contact.
Early symptoms include fever, headache, swelling, back pain, and muscle aches, which may develop into a rash.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Public health emergency Concerns over the MPOX epidemic in 2022. This subsided last year, but low levels of cases are still being reported in some countries.
“Even one death from a preventable and manageable disease is one too many,” Faara said, urging anyone with suspected symptoms to seek medical attention and cooperate with contact tracing.
Faala said the five patients diagnosed had pre-existing immunocompromises and had been infected since early May.
Two of the infected people have been allowed to go home, but two remain in hospital.
Anyone who came into contact with the deceased will be monitored for 21 days.
According to the WHO, the first human cases were reported in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the disease remains endemic.
