June is Men's Health Month – Southern Nevada Health District
Las Vegas – Men's Health Month, held each June, focuses on health and wellness issues facing all men, and throughout the month, the Southern Nevada Health Department (SNHD) encourages men to take charge of their overall health by implementing health-centered decisions.
Men's health issues will be at the forefront at the annual Shop Talk event later this month. “Shop Talk: Getting to the Point” will be held on Thursday, June 27th from 6-8pm at Masterpiece Barber School (3510 E. Bonanza, Las Vegas, NV 89110). Hosted by the Barbershop Health Outreach Project in collaboration with The Men's Room, this free event (men only) will feature medical experts discussing general men's health, cardiovascular health, erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer. Approximately 13.8% of men in the United States are estimated to be in fair or poor health, and women live nearly six years longer than men. Diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes affect men more than women. These diseases can often be prevented with regular checkups and healthy choices, yet men are much less likely than women to see a doctor or report symptoms to a health care provider.
Early detection of cancer and other diseases through health screening is essential to improving survival rates and maintaining good health.
