Whooping cough cases spike in Washtenaw County
WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI — Officials say there have been 21 cases of whooping cough reported in Washtenaw County so far in 2024, a sharp increase compared to the previous three years.
Teens and young adults are also getting the disease, and while in most cases they have been vaccinated against the disease, the protection provided by the vaccine wane after two years, making them more susceptible to the disease and contributing to its spread, Washtenaw County Health Department officials said.
No hospitalizations have been reported.
“Unfortunately, whooping cough appears to be making a comeback,” Laura Baumann, epidemiology program manager for the Washtenaw County Health Department, said in a statement.
Whooping cough is a contagious respiratory disease that gets its name from the whooshing sound an infected person makes when trying to breathe after coughing.
Antibiotic treatment is recommended for all household contacts of whooping cough patients, and anyone diagnosed should avoid contact with others until they have completed at least five days of antibiotics, the agency added.
Officials say the disease spreads when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks, and spread is most prevalent in the early stages of the illness.
Symptoms include a slight fever, runny nose, a bad cough, a bluish coloring of the lips or fingernails, and vomiting. The cough may last for more than a month.
“Because illness from whooping cough can be particularly severe for infants, it is important to identify and treat cases as early as possible,” Baumann said.
For the decade prior to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Washtenaw County reported between 50 and 100 whooping cough cases each year, officials said.
There are two vaccines that can help prevent whooping cough. A booster shot is recommended every 10 years.
