NH has a second case of Jamestown Canyon virus this year
Concord, New Hampshire (AP)—Adults in Bow, New Hampshire tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus. This is the second case of a mosquito-borne disease in the state, a health official said Friday.
The virus is transmitted by being bitten by an infected mosquito. There is no vaccine for it, and treatment consists of supportive care.
Although not hospitalized and in good health, he experienced fever and mild neurological symptoms, health officials said.
It is the eleventh virus since it was first reported in the state in 2013. Moderate to severe central nervous system involvement, including fatal infections, has been reported.
Early symptoms include flu-like illness with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue.
Bow has a higher risk of infection, with moderate levels in the surrounding towns, Goffstown, Dumbarton, Hopkintown, and Allenstown. Towns around Hook Set, Pembroke and Concord remain at medium risk level.
