Whooping cough cases surge in Washtenaw County
Washtenaw County has seen a surge in whooping cough cases compared to the previous three years, with 21 cases reported in 2024, the local health department announced Thursday.
For the decade before the COVID-19 pandemic, the county saw between 50 and 100 cases of the bacterial illness each year. Over the past few years, cases have fallen to lower than average levels nationwide but are now returning to pre-pandemic levels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the CDC, so far in 2024, there have been more than three times as many whooping cough cases as there were in the same period in 2023.
“Unfortunately, whooping cough appears to be making a comeback,” Laura Baumann, epidemiology program manager for the Washtenaw County Health Department, said in a news release. “Because illness from whooping cough can be severe, especially for infants, it is important that we identify and treat cases as early as possible.”
The Washtenaw cases are teenagers and young adults, and no one was hospitalized, the release said. The whooping cough vaccine is part of the four-dose DTap (diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis) series recommended for infants and young children ages 2 to 18 months. Children receive a booster shot between the ages of 4 and 6, according to the health department.
The vaccine is also included in Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis), a teen and adult vaccination given every 10 years beginning at age 11-12 and booster doses during pregnancy.
Most of the cases in Washtenaw County were from vaccinations, but protection can wear off after two years, and teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to the disease and contribute to its spread, the release said.
According to the health department, whooping cough is highly contagious and spreads by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis, which is carried in droplets when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is a respiratory illness that causes fits of coughing. Infected people may make a whooshing noise when trying to breathe after coughing, which is why it's called whooping cough.
Initial symptoms resemble those of a cold, including a slight fever, runny nose, sneezing, and occasional coughing. The coughing tends to get worse after a few weeks, and infected people's lips and fingernails may turn blue due to lack of oxygen during coughing fits, according to the health department. Some people may vomit during severe coughing fits, which can last for more than a month.
Although infected people may appear healthy between coughing bouts, teenagers and adults with complications from whooping cough can suffer from sleep problems, pneumonia and broken ribs, the health department said. Complications in infants include pneumonia, seizures and brain damage, but these are rare. The infection is most deadly in infants under 3 months of age, according to a press release.
The Washtenaw County Health Department is urging anyone who may have been exposed to whooping cough or has symptoms to contact their health care provider or the health department at (734) 544-6700. Antibiotic treatment is recommended, and infected people should avoid contact with others for at least five days while they are being treated.
