Chinomba, his wife Evenes and their four sons live in an area surrounded by dams, rivers and swamps that are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and malaria.
“The other children, who were older and didn't get the vaccine, were getting sick all the time,” Chinomba said. “Maybe every two months they would get sick. We would go to the hospital and they would test for malaria and it would come back positive.”
It's a different story for their youngest son, Wisdom, who was born just as the vaccine arrived: “He's been malaria-free for a year,” Chinomba says proudly.

Community Activists Spread the Word: New Malaria Vaccine Keeps Children Healthy
To encourage parents to vaccinate their children, health workers enlisted community and religious leaders to spread information about the vaccine's safety and effectiveness.
More than two million children have been vaccinated against malaria in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, resulting in significant declines in child mortality.
“There are still deaths, but they're nothing compared to the pre-vaccine era,” Chinomba said. “The vaccines will continue to be available because a generation is growing up. People are embracing the vaccine and making it a part of who they are.”
