CDC warns of Salmonella outbreak linked to bearded dragons
GEORGIA (WALB) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of a Salmonella outbreak linked to bearded dragons.
The CDC has received 15 reports of bearded dragon-related salmonellosis in nine states, including Georgia.
The statement said four people remain hospitalized, no deaths have been reported, and 60 percent of those ill are children under the age of five.
Bearded dragons are Not recommended Reptiles are not suitable pets for children under 5, people over 65, or people with weakened immune systems, as these animals are more likely to contract serious illnesses from bacteria that reptiles carry.
Bearded dragons may appear healthy and clean, but they can carry Salmonella in their droppings.
You can get sick if you touch your bearded dragon or something around it and then touch your mouth or food and ingest the Salmonella bacteria.
What you should do:
- Wash your hands, play safe and stay clean.
- Children under 5 years old should not handle bearded dragons and children over 5 years old should wash their hands after handling or feeding bearded dragons.
- Provide an enclosure just for your bearded dragon. Do not allow your dragon to roam in the same areas where babies or small children crawl and play.
