The loneliness epidemic: Concerns and suggestions for changing your life

“Loneliness is the subjective feeling that our need for connection in life is greater than the connections we actually have,” Murthy said.
Loneliness has become so common that U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has declared it an epidemic, with half of adults saying they have felt lonely in the past few years.
“This isn't just an issue for older people or young people, it affects all age groups,” he said.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated feelings of loneliness by socially isolating us and cutting us off from friends, family and loved ones.
Loneliness has been linked to increased depression, anxiety and suicide, but research shows it can also have devastating effects on your physical health.
“One of the most startling things about loneliness and isolation is the impact it has on our mental and physical health,” Murthy says. “It increases the risk of heart disease, dementia, stroke, and premature death. We actually know that it can slow down or even worsen wound healing. So the health impacts just go on and on.”
In fact, Dr Murthy says the health impacts of loneliness are comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.
But he says it's important to remember you're not alone.
“This is not evidence that you're broken or defective in any way. We all suffer from this,” he said.

Start a conversation
“It starts with small steps that you take, like reaching out to someone and taking 15 minutes a day just to check in on them,” Murthy said.
Connect with others on social media
Use your time online to engage instead of just scrolling through posts.

“Any time we have an opportunity to help others, it might be a small act of lending a hand when someone spills coffee or drops a paper, or it might be noticing a neighbor having trouble raking leaves in their yard. Whatever it may be, these small acts of helping others actually help us feel more connected as well,” he said.
