Healthcare professionals are at increased risk of mental health problems during a pandemic
“What we have learned is that anyone who identifies as a health care professional, a doctor or hospital support worker, has a mental health problem that can be devastating if left untreated. It’s an indication of risk,” said co-author Shevaun Neupert. PhD, statement.
Investigators conducted an online survey of 90 individuals identified as medical professionals. Most of the respondents were doctors, nurses, medical technicians, but also had roles such as hospital management. The researchers also investigated a 90-person control group who was not working in health care, but was consistent with the age and gender of health care workers. The survey included demographic questions and questions about various aspects of mental health and well-being.
The team found that health care professionals reported high levels of stress, anxiety, and fatigue, and poor sense of control over life. Perhaps most notable is the researcher’s finding that, on average, health care professionals report enough symptoms to diagnose the clinical symptoms of depression. In a press release, Neupert said health care workers’ depressive symptom scores were about 30% higher than those of the control group.
Investigators also found that health care workers were less likely to engage in active coping—less preparedness for future stressors and adverse events.
“Our findings suggest that healthcare professionals are now at a much higher risk of negative consequences such as depression,” Neupert said in a press release. “It’s not sustainable, and we need to understand what we’re trying to do about it.”
