COVID-19 cases rising across California, San Diego County on the rise – NBC 7 San Diego

COVID-19 cases are rising across the state, with health experts saying the newest variants are spreading faster. Major metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Los Angeles are also seeing an increase in positive cases as more people head out to enjoy summer vacations.

In San Diego County, data shows a gradual rise in cases and a rise in the positive test rate to 8% from 2.3% in late April, but that's only based on results recorded by home test kits and not people reporting symptoms, said Dr. Jyotiu Sandhu of Sharp Lease Steele, who said the number of cases is likely much higher.

“Some people come to the clinic, some people do it at home,” Sandhu said. “Obviously, it's not perfect, because a lot of the people who are doing it at home aren't even doing it, they're not keeping track of it.”

The latest variants, Sandhu said, are known as FLiRT, and according to Johns Hopkins University, they include KP.2 and JN.1.7, which are derived from the dominant strain of JN.1 that has been circulating across the country for the past few months.

“The two major variants that are spreading across California have been identified in Los Angeles,” Sandhu said.

It could take three to four weeks for San Diego County to see an increase in cases caused by the new variant, he said.

“These are very different from the winter variants and have evolved enough that they may be able to spread further to people who have been exposed to the winter variants,” Sandhu said.

While different strains of the virus are constantly evolving, the treatment process for infected individuals remains the same.

“Keep a record of your symptoms and consult your doctor. You may need antiviral treatment based on your risk factors,” Sandhu said.

Dr Sandhu also recommended that everyone, especially those with vulnerable health risks, get vaccinated, adding that more vulnerable people should keep their vaccinations up to date every four months.
