Avian flu detected at seventh facility | Media Release | Media Centre | Overview

The avian influenza virus was confirmed at a seventh farm in Victoria, which was already under quarantine.
Testing confirmed the highly pathogenic H7N3 strain at a commercial egg farm located within the current restricted area of Golden Plains Shire, where movement restrictions are already in place.
All poultry within the facility will be humanely culled under veterinary supervision in accordance with national policy and the facility will be cleaned and cleared of infestation.
Victoria's Chief Veterinary Officer Graeme Cook thanked producers in restricted and controlled areas for their cooperation in conducting testing and surveillance activities in collaboration with the Victorian Department of Agriculture.
“We continue to respond to these detections through ongoing testing and prudent biosecurity measures, working with affected producers and the poultry industry.”
“Movement restrictions are expected to continue for several weeks and we are working with the industry to help poultry farmers with the logistical challenges they are facing,” Dr Cook said.
Existing travel restrictions remain in place in designated areas near Terran, Meredith and Lethbridge, including:
- The restricted area covers affected properties in Meredith and Lethbridge, and the management area buffer is bounded by Bacchus Marsh Road to the east and Colac-Ballarat Road to the west.
- A 5km restricted zone around Terran Farm and a larger controlled area buffer zone with a 15km radius
- Require housing for all birds within these areas.
Within restricted and controlled areas, permits are required to move birds, poultry products, feed or equipment on or off the premises.
Poultry farmers, backyard chicken and bird owners are being urged to report any unexplained bird deaths to the Victorian Emergency Hotline. 1800 226 226.
Consumers need not worry about eggs and other poultry products – they pose no risk and are safe to consume. Victoria has a secure supply chain, including the import of eggs from outside Victoria, so this outbreak has not had a significant impact on supply.
