Her husband, a teacher who shared his experience with terminal breast cancer, said “she would have been really pleased” with the response to his final message.

Kate Rackham left instructions for her family. Share a message on X After his death on June 13, she urged her 17,000 followers to “don't cry for me.”

The 46-year-old, from Manchester, helped set up the charity Fighting To Be Hard, which aims to support women with incurable secondary breast cancer.

Her husband, Mark Rackham, said he had no idea how many people she helped until she died.

He told BBC North West Tonight: “She used this little phrase, 'exploiting the issue'.

“So she always tried to take something from her diagnosis and turn it into something positive.”

Mrs Rackham was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39, which later spread to other parts of her body.

The mother-of-two was given a terminal diagnosis five years ago, which Ms Rackham described as “devastating”.

But despite the limitations imposed by her illness, including having to give up running and drinking alcohol, Mrs Rackham tried to live as full a life as she could, her husband said.

He added: “She was on the dance floor until 2am and I was the one who wanted to go to bed.”

“She was a wonderful person.”

The Fighting To Be Heard foundation, set up in 2021 by 20 women, including Rackham, aims to give a voice to people with the disease.

Catherine Orr, who helps run the charity, described Mrs Rackham as “wonderful in every way”.

He said another member of the charity had also recently passed away, adding: “They knew their time was limited but chose to donate it to others in the same situation as themselves, which is also remarkable.”

Ms Orr said the charity would publish the book and the proceeds would go towards medical costs for children who have a parent with secondary breast cancer.

Mr Rackham said since his wife's death his family and friends have received “lovely” messages from people locally and around the world who had been helped by her advice.

Asked how he and his two daughters were coping, he replied: “We're still in shock. It's been five days since she died.”

“We did everything we could to build resilience in our kids. We constantly struggled to come up with strategies for how much we told our kids, were we informing them, were we being honest with them.”

“But at the same time, without creating chronic stress in the lives of our children. They went to school today.

“The kids wanted to see their friends and Kate told us we had to hang in there and that's what we're going to do so we just take each day as it comes.”
