Friday, August 7, 2020 (HealthDay News)-When it comes to face masks, not all are equally effective. New research found.
Researchers at Duke University have developed a method of testing different types of masks to test the masks that are most effective at stopping the spray from the human mouth and preventing the spread of the new coronavirus.
They relied on an ad hoc device consisting of a box, a laser, a lens and a cell phone camera.
“We’ve confirmed that when people speak, they emit small droplets that speak and spread the disease without coughing or sneezing,” said Martin Fischer, a chemist and physicist in Durham, North Carolina. It was “We also found that some face coverings were much better than others by blocking the emitted particles.”
Which mask is the most effective? This is a valveless N95 mask followed by a surgical or polypropylene mask.
Handmade cotton masks also prevent many drops from the usual remarks, researchers said.
But neck fleeces like bandanas and balaclavas did not block saliva sprays at all.
“This was just a demonstration. More work needs to be done to investigate masks, speakers, and how people wear them,” Fisher said in a college news release. He also shows that companies and other people offering masks to employees and patrons can do similar tests.
“If everyone wears a mask, 99% of these droplets can stop before reaching anyone else,” said Dr. Eric Westman, an associate professor at Duke University. .. “If you don’t have a vaccine or antiviral drug, it’s one of the proven ways to protect yourself as well as others.”
