The National Institutes of Health recommends that unvaccinated people who are at high risk for severe COVID illness start taking paxlobid (a combination of nilmatreorvir and ritonavir) within five days of the onset of mild to moderate symptoms. The drug is taken twice a day for five days. But can paxlobid help if you're fully vaccinated and at high risk for severe COVID illness? What about those who are healthy but unvaccinated? A study published on April 3, 2024, New England Journal of Medicine We explored these questions. The researchers enrolled 1,300 people with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. To be eligible for the study, participants had to be vaccinated (fully or partially) and have at least one risk factor for more severe COVID symptoms, or be unvaccinated but have no risk factors. High-risk unvaccinated people were excluded.
About half of the subjects were randomly selected to receive paxlobidi every 12 hours for five days; the rest received a placebo. The researchers found no significant differences in symptom relief or disease progression between the paxlobidi and placebo groups. These results, combined with those of other studies, suggest that many people with mild or moderate COVID symptoms do not need to take paxlobidi right away. However, people over 65, those with chronic medical conditions (especially heart or lung disease), those with compromised immune systems, and those whose COVID symptoms worsen for more than 24 hours should consult their doctor.
