It's a Tuesday morning and music therapy sessions are in full swing at Haven Day Centre in Boronia, a non-profit charity for people with dementia who live independently at home or with a carer.
Archie, who played guitar in a local jazz band, requested the song, and the band members performed it enthusiastically.
The council funded the seven-week programme which culminates with a concert for families and carers, led by music therapist Ajay on guitar.
“When you have dementia, the parts of the brain that shrink are some of the last to house music,” says Ajay. “Memory is also housed in the same place, so you have access to memory and music even as many other functions decline. One of the benefits of using music is that it provides emotional release and improves quality of life.”

Nick from New Zealand requested a traditional Maori love song. He was confused.
“I like Maori songs because they remind me of New Zealand,” he says. “It's a lovely place. We bought 40 acres on Great Barrier Island off the coast of Auckland. These sessions make a difference here. They make us more active, basically.”

“We talk to each other,” Carol says. “We all have different issues, but it doesn't seem to matter. Music is universal. We enjoy being together and have a common purpose.”
Cathy Miller, the center's coordinator, said the program wouldn't have been possible without Congress' support.
“This has been a fantastic opportunity to explore music with a memory and dementia group who wouldn't have had the opportunity to enjoy it otherwise,” she says. “Whether it's tapping their toes, shaking a tambourine, beating a drum, singing or dancing, music is so inclusive and engaging. It's so joyful to see their smiles – it lifts their spirits and they often keep singing all day.”
