Shigella cases in Santa Clara County – NBC Bay Area

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is investigating multiple cases of Shigella infection within the homeless community.

Health officials say Shigella is a highly contagious bacteria that can cause diarrhea and other serious illness in some cases.

“Shigella is an extremely contagious disease,” said Monica Roy, deputy health officer for the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health. “It only takes a small amount of the bacteria to cause illness, and it spreads easily.”

The health department said it identified three confirmed cases between June 3 and June 17 and is investigating whether four other Shigella cases are linked to those cases. An additional 18 suspected cases have also been identified.

Most of the reported cases are linked to people living in San Jose's Columbus Park, where the city has installed additional portable public toilets and hand-washing stations.

“We're starting to provide drinking water and washing water to help people stay clean and prevent infection,” San Jose Vice Mayor Kip Harkness said.

Health officials say Shigella can be spread by eating or drinking food contaminated with the bacteria, by coming into direct contact with the bacteria from someone who has the bacteria, or through shared surfaces.

The health department said most healthy people will recover from the infection without treatment, adding that the risk to the general public was “very low”.

County public health nurses and doctors have been out in the camps educating unsheltered residents to help stop the spread of infection.

“We are working aggressively to distribute and collect test kits to everyone, but it's going to be difficult,” Roy said. “It's going to be hard to identify everyone who may be affected.”
