Researchers at The Ohio State University, based in Columbus, discovered Hepatitis E can be transmitted sexually and may also be linked to male infertility, according to a study published on May 24. PLOS Pathogens.
The study was conducted on pigs, where Hepatitis E is endemic. Throughout the study, the researchers observed how Hepatitis E affected the reproductive system. Although the virus was present in the pigs' semen, the researchers found that the Hepatitis E virus was still infectious when isolated from the sperm, indicating the possibility of sexual transmission.
The researchers found that the Hepatitis E virus was present in the heads of sperm. The pigs also shed the virus in their feces and it was present in other tissues. But because the virus is present in semen, the researchers believe it may also be contributing to increased infertility in men and pregnancy-related mortality in women.
“Because it is unclear whether the hepatitis E virus can actually complete its replication cycle in the head of the sperm, we believe that sperm are carriers rather than susceptible cells,” Dr. Scott Kenny, associate professor of veterinary preventive medicine at The Ohio State University and senior author of the study, said in a news release.
Dr. Kenny and his colleagues noted that additional studies are needed to evaluate the results of both studies.
“For between 20% and 50% of documented cases of male infertility, the cause is truly unknown,” Dr. Kenny said in a statement, “which is why we are pushing for more testing for the Hepatitis E virus as a potential cause in these cases.”
