Eight cancer treatment hurdles and patient response in a pandemic
New Qualitative Research JAMA Oncology We analyzed the response of cancer patients to certain difficult situations during a pandemic.
Eight physicians conducted at the Midwest Academic Medical Center between March 25 and April 2 identified eight oncology-specific scenarios that made communication with patients difficult. Forty-eight cancer patients provided responses to each scenario in an anonymous online survey. In most scenarios, patient reactions were angry, fearful, and anxious.
Below are some of the COVID-19-related scenarios and answers from a typical patient survey.
1. Bad result for COVID-19. Patients have expressed concerns that they are vulnerable (“are they susceptible to the virus”) or may not be able to prevent infection with the virus?
2. Delayed cancer screening.. The patient was worried about the late detection of a new malignant neoplasm (“What if my cancer comes back and it’s too late to be screened?”).
3. Delayed diagnostic workup.. Patients weighed the severity of cancer against COVID-19 (“Why is COVID considered more important than cancer?”).
Four. Delay the start of treatment. The patient was very emotional and said, “Why am I being punished when I follow the instructions and make sure I am self-isolated?”
Five. Providing non-standard treatment. The patient felt unimportant (“I make my care and health feel unimportant to you”).
6. Treatment is interrupted. Patients have a higher likelihood of poor outcomes (“This sounds like a death sentence.”)
7. Follow-up images or delayed care. The patient expressed abandonment (“You leave me to handle this alone.”)
8. I cannot be hospitalized. The patient expressed an idea that was consistent with “why my life is not as valuable as the life of someone at COVID-19.”
