West Northamptonshire County Council reveals women are not getting cervical cancer screening

According to statistics from a local council, one-third of people eligible for cervical cancer screening do not receive it.

West Northamptonshire Council said 31% of people who had booked did not attend.

This figure is roughly in line with the national attendance figures. Recorded by NHS England.

A council spokesman said the test was “vital in helping to prevent the development of cancer”.

The test is routinely offered to women aged 25 to 64 and people with a cervix.

The numbers show Cervical cancer is the 14th most common cancer in women. The UK is seeing around 3,200 new cases each month.

All eligible individuals registered with a GP (female) will automatically receive an invitation by post.

Dr Annapurna Sen, health protection consultant at West Northamptonshire Council, said: “If you have missed your last appointment please call your GP to discuss how to make an appointment.”
