Men's health should be a year-round priority
VERMILION, Ohio — June is Men's Health Month, a time to become aware of the health issues men face and learn what they can do to better manage their health, which is important because many men admit they avoid going to the doctor.
Good Morning Cleveland anchor Tiffany Tarpley spoke with a Vermillion man and a Mercy Health physician about why men should prioritize their health year-round.
“Once you hit 40, you start to decline,” says John Covalan.
He takes control of his health by consistently undergoing age-appropriate medical checkups. There is a wide range of health conditions that disproportionately affect men, especially as we age.
“The No. 1 concern is always cardiovascular care, obesity-related illnesses, diabetes. Those are huge issues,” Dr. Craig Recco said.
Recko suggests making small but impactful changes to prevent or manage these symptoms.
“Step more, eat less sugar and calories, eat more protein, make better choices and eat more fresh vegetables,” Recco said.
But the most important step is making time to see your doctor.
Neglecting screening and preventive care can have dire consequences.
“People are going to be hesitant because they don't necessarily want to find something bad, and I understand that, but I always try to tell them the sooner you find something, the more you can do about it,” Recco said.
That's why Kovalan sees his doctor regularly.
“Get a checkup at least once a year, and I highly recommend doing what I do and getting one twice a year,” says Kovalan. “It never hurts to get a checkup. It might cost a few dollars, but a few dollars now is nothing compared to what you'll get in the future.”
