The largest proportion of hospitalized patients were people aged over 85. Admissions to intensive care units due to COVID-19 remained “very low,” but increased slightly to 0.12 per 100,000 people.

The agency said the term FliRT was inspired by the name of a mutation in the genetic code of a variant that descended from JN.1 with variant BA.2.86 as its parent.

Three lineages of FLiRT variants, called KP.1.1, KP.2 and KP.3, account for 40% of all COVID cases in the UK as of April 2024, according to the UKHSA.

KP.2 appears to have driven a surge in cases in the spring, while KP.3 appears to have prompted the start of a summer surge.

A UKHSA spokesman said: “UKHSA is continually monitoring the data on new variants both in the UK and internationally to assess their severity and the ongoing effectiveness of vaccines.”
